With its once-revered electronics business flagging, Sony Corp. is placing a huge bet this year that 3-D technology will vault the company back into a leadership position in the living room. Will it be successful or will it be another lost opportunity from the former "Walkman King?"

Whether it was Apple with music players, Samsung with televisions or Amazon with e-readers, Sony has repeatedly been overtaken in businesses where it was once a leader.

Mr. Stringer's wager comes at a time when the 3-D market is already packed, and getting more so by the minute: The top four TV makers, representing more than 50% of the global market, have also committed to a big 3-D push. Smaller companies are expected to dive in, too. With competition so intense, the field could quickly go from nascent to overcrowded and result in a brutal, profit-killing price war.

I've been thinking that Sony may not be the 3-D Market leader, but who knows.

Well, Sony has a lot of practice in bringing out new groundbreaking technologies, something that has always been a central them in Sony culture something that they've always been about, and they've gotten a lot better at this, as the process of bringing out new technologies has gotten a lot trickier and more complicated compared to the simplified business environment that we had during the 1950's.

Sony knows that the whole company will succeed or lower itself to mediocrity with the big bet they are putting on 3-d so they are getting everybody involved:
-games division is offering several games in 3-d, in fact sony corporate may soon require this
-Sony's movies division will require movies to be made in 3-d especially the big action types
-Lastly, we have some cheap new 3-d players out by sony's electronics. Sony def wasn't the first to have a player but oppo just came out w/ a $399 3-d player so I dont think that a sony 3-d blu-ray player is that far off

They're right, sony has lost battles in other fields so they should just let the 3D phase pass them by and not try at all to profit form it. Makes total sense.

Apple was in the same boat probably worse before Jobs returned and then proceeded to own the world with his ipod and iphones

On that note, sony is in the best position of all companies since they have television hardware and production, movie production, game hardware and software, blu-ray, computers and everything else that could be involved in 3d. No other company can bring to bear the weapons sony can in the 3d war.
