When recommending PC parts to people, I tend to be most strict about my power supply recommendations, basically because there are a few brands (Corsair, SeaSonic, XFX) that have a proven track record of building solid, quality units. Oddly, these recommendations tend to draw more controversy than any other. More often than not, I'll have others fire back at me: "Look at this great deal on a...

I'll ask you the same things that I tell anyone looking for a "gaming laptop:" How much do you think you'll be playing really hardware-intensive games "on the go," and are you willing to pay twice as much money for hardware that's half as powerful as a comparatively priced desktop to do so? If your answers to these two questions aren't at least "very often" and "I guess so," respectively, then...
Fallout 3, DiRT 2, KB:AP, and NWN2 Gold are the standout deals, methinks. Call of Cthulhu and Stalker Clear Sky are both good buys for five bucks, but read the reviews first because they're heavily flawed titles. Everything else ranges from "meh" to "avoid at all costs."...
Save your time and money and buy Battlefield: Bad Company 2 instead of this overpriced, consolized Counter-Strike ripoff....
You really should consider just building it yourself. Modern PC parts are basically Legos, and it's impossible to screw something up unless you can't follow some very clear directions. At a $600-$700 budget, you can easily build something that'll run C&C3 and RA3 at max settings at a pretty high resolution. I'd recommend a tri- or quad-core Athlon II, Micro-ATX AM3 mobo, Antec Mini P180 (there's...

Keep in mind that $750 can buy you a beefy gaming desktop that'll let you play games at a steady 60 FPS at max (rather than minimum) settings, and at a much better resolution.Just something to keep in mind if you don't think you'll game "on the go" much....

I was thinking of getting one with a bit more expandability such as MSI 770-C45 MSI AM3 NF750-G55Biostar A770E3These can all go up to 16GB and the Biostar is only about $6 more. Should I stay away from these brands or what ? Thanks Edit: Also your opinion on the Antec 300 case. Sorry if...
mrstickball said: Okay, so here is what I am thinking. Newegg has some nice combo deals which cut the cost by 10% or more in some cases: You shouldn't do this. Newegg combo deals are generally 50% quality components and 50% complete junk that they bundle with the good components to get rid of it. You'll actually be losing "bang for your buck" that way. Instead, go for: -Core i5...
Squilliam said: I don't think its worth the price relative to the phenoms, see first quote for the $80-90 price differential. The one that you quoted in your first post is actually the Phenom II X4 955, which sits at 3.2 GHz instead of the 965's 3.4. The 965 is $183.99 on Newegg right now, in comparison to $194.99 for the i5. Also, here's a quality LGA 1156 mobo from MSI...
mrstickball said:Can anyone care to explain why the i5-750 is better than a Phenom II X4 965 when Passmark.com rates the Phenom higher on its user benchmarks? Curious to understand why... Generally, "synthetic benchmark" is a euphamism for, "useless piece of crap." Here's a graph comparing the two in Photoshop: And in Excel: And in WinRAR compression: And finally, in Far...

First, download and install the Stalker Complete 2009 mod. It improves the graphics and fixes a ton of bugs while keeping the core game completely intact. Second, treat it like a stealth game. Enemies are tough as nails and you're a weak little girly-man, so don't fight when you don't absolutely need to. Those two tips are the best ways to enjoy the flawed gem that is Shadow of Chernobyl....

I, too, get off to fantasy women who are nothing but a collection of polygons and textures.Besides that, most of the "women" in the OP aren't even attractive in a purely conceptual sense. They're just scantily clad fantasy bimbos with guns/kung fu/magic. The only realistically portrayed ones are the Heavy Rain chick and the real actor from RA2.Surely I can't be alone in preferring real (or at the...
There's not much that can make use of hyperthreading at the moment. Intel really overshot the market with the i7 line....
Use $700 to build a nice gaming desktop and spend the remaining $300 on a netbook. You'll get a nice gaming machine and a small, light notebook to use for word processing/note-taking/web-surfing/whatever. You won't be able to play modern games "on the go," but who really does that anyway?...
You PS3 defenders keep moving the goal-posts. It is literally impossible for any PS3 title to be technically more visually impressive than even the first Crysis. Period. Now if you want to talk art direction, well, that's a very subjective thing and you're entitled to your own opinion. (IMO Okami on the PS2/Wii beats any game mentioned thus far for art direction). But technically speaking, Crysis...
