XenoGears Vs. PlaneScape Torment?

in Gaming Discussion on 10 May 2010

Have you even played Chrono Trigger? It tells a remarkably complex story, the likes of which you can rarely if ever find, anywhere....

Tier 1 would be as follows (in descending order of quality):XenogearsRadical Dreamers: Nusumenai HōsekiXenosaga Episode I: Der Wille zur MachtXenosaga Episode III: Also sprach ZarathustraChrono CrossXenosaga Episode II: Jenseits von Gut und BöseChrono TriggerTier 2 would be populated by the likes of Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, Metal Gear Solid 4:...

And Xenogears isn't nearly alone in telling a superior story. Xenogears, the Xenosaga trilogy, Chrono Trigger, Chrono Cross, and Radical Dreamers are all in an entirely different league to anything else out there, with the leagues below it being populated by other JRPGs with the odd exception such as Lost or Mulholland Dr. or Metal Gear Solid. Planescape: Torment is at best a 6th tier story....

    XenoGears Vs. PlaneScape Torment?

in Gaming Discussion on 10 May 2010

Oh wow, looks like I should have checked back on this one sooner, wasn't really expecting a well thought out response. :D
Where do I start? First off, when it comes to storytelling, games aren't even in the same realm as film or literature and I'd argue that JRPGs are pretty low on the totem pole compared to some of the better games out there. Why? It's because they try to be...

No, it's not as deep as Xenogears because it doesn't cover the quantity of themes in such detail. If we're talking about how it's not as good, I'd also point out how it's nowhere near as complex, nowhere near as emotional, and nowhere near possesive of such incredible music. As far as story is concerned it doesn't possess a single advantage over Xenogears....

Well aside from a change in the narrative (which wasn't entirely to my liking but still something I could live with and not something that can be said to objectively be a flaw) the only real difference was that it added an even greater emphasis on the story, which was pretty ideal for me personally, and simply capitalized on the game's greatest strength....

I was reffering to something it lacked, not something that it possessed, when I reffered to it as weak [in comparison to Xenogears], so a specific example isn't something that can really be cited. The simple fact is that it does not cover anywhere near the number of themes that Xenogears does, and with nowhere near the detail. In what ways was Xenogears flawed?...
weak how?
Simply that it doesn't come anywhere near the detail or scope of a game like Xenogears. Its pretty deep by some standards, and perhaps in comparion to games like Baldur's Gate or Icewind Dale but in comparison to the likes of Xenogears and Radical Dreamers it's pretty simplistic....

JRPGs tell the best stories you can find in any medium, and Xenogears specifically is the very best the genre (and storytelling of any medium) has to offer. It explores the philosophical ideas of Friedrich Nietzsche, Sigmund Freud, Carl Jung and Jacques Lacan, it delves into the nature of God, The Universe and existence, the nature of human memory, the struggle between man and machine, the horrors...

Xenogears, by far. It explores just about every single theme and concept imaginable in the greatest of details, contains an absurd amount of symbolism and is generally of far greater scope. Planescape: Torment is pretty weak by comparison....
