What is your avatar from?

Also, congrats on your 4'500th post! ^_^

Oh WOW, good eye.

Front Mission 4 for PS2. It's a turn based strategy RPG like Fire Emblem and Advance Wars, but involves more customization. Really great franchise, I think you can find a copy of Front Mission 1 (a SNES remake) for DS for $8 used at EB, and it's defiantly worth it.

Wow! That's really, really cheap!
And, thanks! ^_^

Truly glad to see another JRPG fan like myself. About last remnant you mentioned, a while back I was looking into all the JRPGs available on 360 and got quite a few of them that looked interesting like Star Ocean, Infinite Undiscovery, Final Fantasy, Magna Carta and recently TOV. I looked at some last Last Remnant gameplay vids and it didn't seem that great, in fact looked quite boring with its old turn and block based RPG style, not that there's anything wrong with that.

Anyway have you played any other JRPGs on 360, I still have to say that PS2 had some of the best JRPGs ever, Persona series being my absolute favourite. Can't wait for persona 5.

Yea, and when I played it, it's really prone to slowdown. Many attacks cause the framerate to drop to 10FPS or lower, it almost pauses the game. Honestly I have 0GP on this one, I might just not touch it.

Also I did the same as you. Tales of Vesperia, Lost Odyssey, Blue Dragon, FFXIII, Infinite Undiscovery, Magna Carta 2, Star Ocean, Record of Agarest War, Enchanted Arms, and well a few other stuff from Square like Project Sylpheed (which is really good despite reviews, just really short).

I own them all, beat Lost Odyssey, Enchanted Arms, Magna Carta 2, Sylpheed, and about halfway through the rest. Really working on ToV now, but w/ Mass Effect 3 out now and XenoBlade around the corner here, I won't have time to beat it until September or so.

I play most of my JRPG's on the DS, beat most of them for that console, and now I'm working on building a PS2/PS1 JRPG library. Recently bought Crono Cross and Dragon Quest VIII, both I think are amazing.

on 25 March 2012

So what's your favorite JRPG series? I've always been a big fan for Fire Emblem's, but after that it's always been a 1 hit wonder (Chrono Trigger, Super Mario RPG, Lost Odyssey, Front Mission 1 & 4, etc).

Really just getting into PS1/PS2 JRPG's, but I gotta say FFVII and FFX are crap compared to 2D Final Fantasy's.

Also P.S. Catherine isn't a JRPG, but it's Atlus and I still play that.

on 25 March 2012

If you look at my games, I apparently have 95 RPG's lol! SNES was the best IMO, but I'm really enjoying PS1. Can't believe I missed out on XenoGears and Final Fantasy Tactics as a Kid.

Also P.S. for Pokemon White/Black, there is a promo Mystery gift where you can get Resharim or Zekrom free. Just Mystery gift Nintendo WFC and you will get the one you don't have at level 100. Noticed Lugia in your picture, so thought you might want to know.

on 25 March 2012

WOW man, you are awesome, probably one of the most hardcore JRPG fan I have seen in a while, and you know there's not a lot of people appreciating Japanese games nowadays sadly.

Well my favourite JRPG, if you can consider it a JRPG lol has to be pokemon. I have pretty much played every entry in the series (who hasn't?) and I started playing the games competitively from pokemon diamond and pearl, if fact I won one of the official nintendo championships in my country a few years back and went on to compete in the world championships in san diego (where I got trashed by the Japanese players lol, they are too friggin good). So yea I am a mad pokemon fan and can't wait for b/w 2

But anyway dude, Persona has to be my favourite jrpg if not considering pokemon, Although I am 20 years my first console was the NES which I played as a child, Mario 2, Duck Hunt and the other classics. But after I didn't grow up on Sega or Nintendo so missed out on a lot of classic jrpgs, I got out of consoles and played on PC, Epics like doom 2, raptor, house of the dead 1 and 2, virtua cop, etc. Later I played Neo geo games, metal slug, king of fighters, samurai showdown and a lot more. I only got back into mainstream console gaming on the PS2, hence started playing JRPGs from then. Thats why I haven't really played stuff like chrono trigger, xenogears, etc. I did have nintendo handhelds though gameboy, gameboy advance, ds, now 3ds and played a few epics on the DS like the world ends with you, which btw is one of the best as I am sure you probably already know.

So yea if I had to pick, I would say Persona 3/4 and the World ends with you were some of my absolute favourites.

Oops just realised how long this post turned out to be, sorry about that. So yea I do intend to get Catherine as you pointed out and will get it very soon hopefully, just bought the 3DS recently and low on cash lol. I don't know if you played Ocarina of time (original or 3ds and your list of games in insanely long to look through) but I found it extremely boring and just gave up on it after grinding for a while, I played a few zelda games like minish cap, link to the past and spirit tracks on the handhelds but ocarina of time just doesn't connect with me, although since everyone says its the best game of all time, I at least had to give it a try since I didn't have the N64.

on 25 March 2012

Pokemon Black got me back into Pokemon after Diamond/Pearl threw me out of it. Trying to make an epic lineup (Arceus, Mewtwo, Zekrom, Dialga, and 2/3 of Kyogre, Ho-Oh, and Groudon). Just got Arceus so I haven't decied who to boot. Also making a strong non-legendary lineup, but they are only lvl 50 or so now.

Not a fan of The World Ends With You. Got about 6 hours into it and the 2 screen fighting annoys me more then anything. I don't really have a standout DS JRPG, but I loved Golden Sun on GBA (Not DS), and all those FF remakes and Fire Emblem...damn GBA was awesome for JRPG's.

I liked Ocarina of Time, and if you played it in 1997, it was pretty damn epic. The gameplay was so polished and new back then. It's harder to appreciate now with all the advances 3D gaming have gone through. I'm a bigger fan of Majora's Mask though. Just because most people loved it doesn't mean you have to, I'm not a huge fan of FFVII for instance, I think IX and well... II, IV,V, and VI are better.

SNES/PS1 are the Holy Grail for JRPG's. Trust me. Chrono Trigger and FFVI (if you can handle the retro graphics) kick the but out of all console and handheld JRPG's nowdays. XenoGears is also epic on PS1, and I think the only game which comes close in quality now is XenoBlade. Suikoden I've been told is also mega fun.

Also for Catherine, don't get your hopes up. The game is fun, but there aren't that many cut scenes, and the decisions you make are extremely black & white. There are no grey or neutral decisions, and overall it feels like the game forces you towards specific endings. For instance, you can't leave Katherine for Catherine (You have to cheat, or ditch Catherine), or come clean early on, which are two things I wanted to do. Still a good game, but....could have been implemented better, it's lacking content.

on 26 March 2012

P.S. My non legendary line-up is looking to become Dragonite/Salamance, Metagross, Garchomp, Hydreigon, Tyranitar, and Slaking. Was considering Archeops and Volcarona due to their strong type combinations (only rock moves do major damage on Volcarona, but slying and water are okay).

on 26 March 2012

Believe me man, if I know anything about Atlus from playing their games, then I know to expect the unexpected. I don't intend to get Catherine because I'm expecting something very specific from the game, but because its going to be something that I have never played the likes of, thats what Atlus does best and thats why I love them so much. I may or may not end up liking the game in the end, but I am sure appreciate what Atlus does.

I think you are the first person to not like TWEWY. I do agree the 2 screen combat is just too much to handle, so I pretty much just mashed the right button and focused on the bottom screen which is where the real thing was happening. Had no problems completing the game like that, TWEWY to me is very unique in both plot and gameplay.

Also I don't know what you are using your pokemon for. Are you going to play online with them or are you just training them just for the heck of it? I am more of a competitive player as I said before but I can give you some basic advice that would give you an edge over your random casual player. In terms of your non-legendary team (as quite a few legendaries are not allowed in random online battles), I can suggest at a basic level to make sure your pokemon complement each other. One thing to look out for is their abilities. For instance you would preferably not want tyranitar and salamence/dragonite on the same team as tyranitar's ability sand stream would end up damaging your own teammates. But you would definitely want garchomp with tyranitar as garchomp's ability sand veil will take advantage of the sandstorm caused by tyranitar to give itself 30% evasion chance (sand veil's ability plus since its ground type its unaffected by sandstorm). So in battle, you could send out tyranitar to start the sand storm up and send out garchomp later to take advantage of it. If you were even more keen, you could give your garchomp the item brightpowder which further increases your evasion by 10%, hence you will have a 40% chance of dodging every attack that has 100% accuracy in the game (not taking into account attacks like aerial ace which hit despite any accuracy boosts). Also I wouldn't use Slaking as his ability traunt lets you attack every 2 turns, he is a very niche type of pokemon that fills in only very specific roles in rare or novely teams and should be avoided. Same goes with Archeops, his ability (whatever its name is can't remember off the top of my head) actually cuts your attack in half when your health is below 50% and thats very bad considering Archeops has very poor defenses and you will be below 50% in no time. So you see, although Archeops and Slaking both appear to be very strong at first sight, they have other severe drawbacks that really changes the way you use them.

Anyway you may want to think a bit along those lines to help you have an edge if you are battling others.

on 26 March 2012

Catherine is good, I'm glad Atlus made it, but there are other better games with similar mechanics (e.g. InFamous).

For Pokemon, Arceus and Tyranitar are two Pokemon I didn't love. However I did notice that Zapdos and the semi-legendaries are allowed in the BattleTrain/whatever. If I leveled Zapdos, would it count as a non legendary for scaled (battles where Pokemon are scaled to lvl 50 or 100) battles? What about other semi-legendaries like Victini and Darkrai?

If I could add those semi-legendaries I would make it Darkrai, Metagross, Garchomp...and maybe Tyranitar and Landaros to benefit from the sandstorm. Actually I dunno what I would do, Dragon/Ground/Flying types are weak to ice and everyone has blizzard. so I'd want some non dragon semi-legendaries. Maybe Heatran, and Manaphy. I like Victini because of its speed, but it's too weak to too many types.

I want to make a party with a good selection of types. Can't use all three Tyranitar, Landaros and Garchomp because a single blizzard could kill them all, and I don't like how tyranitar is 4x weak to fighting and Dragonite/Garchomp/Landaros are 4x weak to ice.

Right now, I would only garentee Darkrai (but I dunno how to get him), and Metagross. I would consider Zapdos and Raiku because of their type, and a dragon type.

My Legendary lineup is solid though, I put lots of time into thinking who I want to include and which TM's I want to teach him.

on 26 March 2012

Darkrai is not allowed anywhere lol, its waaaaaay too OP, you could pretty much spam dark void and your opponent would not be able to do anything.

Zapdos on the other hand is allowed in battle train. In fact Garchomp+Zapdos is great combo for double battles. You can just use garchomp's earthquake and zapdos's discharge to hit both the opponent's pokemon while not hitting your won. If I were you I would avoid tyranitar altogether, he is a very strong and unique pokemon but is only good for high level play. If you use him, you have to pretty much base your entire team around him (these types of teams are called sandstorm teams). At a low level casual game he's only going to get in your way with his ability. So just use strong pokemon like salamence, metagross, zapdos, etc but try to make sure they don't all have the same weakness and that they have attacks that can cover a wide range of types for super effective damage. For example Salamence is weak to ice and rock but metagross is resistant to ice and rock, so if you predict a pokemon is about to use blizzard on your salamence just switch to metagross to resist it. On the flip side, metagross is weak to fire and ground but salamence is resistant to fire and immune to ground, so switch to salamence if you think an earthquake is incoming. Make sure all your pokemon also don't have the same attacks, give them attacks of different types so that you can hit a wide range of pokemon for super effective damage. For example don't give salamence a moveset consisting of dragon claw, draco meteor, flamethrower and fireblast. Give it something like Draco meteor, flamethrower, earthquake, hydro pump.

Also if you are wondering on what legendaries are allowed and what aren't, then I believe you can just check it at the entrance of the battle trains under rules, or you could just look at them online.

on 26 March 2012

The Battle Train says it doesn't allow the super Legendaries. Guys like Mew, Mewtwo, Jerachi, Ho-Oh, Groudon, Arceus, Dialga, etc....I think Darkrai is allowed.

Now I just want to know if he is allowed for scaled battles.

As for your method about Salamance and Metagross... the problem with Dragon and especially flying Dragon types is their weakness to ice. Most Pokemon can learn the TM Blizzard.

Still with the discovery that guys like Zapdos are allowed (and that dual battle technique you mentioned), I have to rethink my non-legendary lineup. Metagross and Darkrai are the only two for sure in's.

Do you know how to get a Darkrai in Diamond?

on 26 March 2012

http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Battle_Subway#Banned_Pok.C3.A9mon

List of all pokemon banned is given in that page. But Darkrai is a pokemon that you can't get in game in diamond or pearl unless through a nintendo event. Its one of those event pokemon, normally you need to obtain a ticket from a nintendo event to go to an island in the game where you can catch darkrai.

I believe I have a couple of darkrais lying around on my D/P card that are from the japanese darkrai movie event, heck I think that darkrai even has spatial rend and roar of time, the two signature attacks of dialga and palkia. If you want one just give me your friend code and I can give it to you.

The same goes for Arceus, its also an event pokemon.

on 26 March 2012

Oh, thanks man. I have Arceus (there is an event going on now for a free one, check pokemon db for it). There is also a second event for Zekrom/Reshirim.

I'll send you my friend code when I get home, I'm done school in a week, maybe we can battle then.

on 26 March 2012

My friend code is 0003 3647 3944

I recently beat Heartgold and plan to import my guys (Mewtwo and such) into Black. Have to borrow a friends DS to do it, but after I do, I wouldn't mind having a battle or two with you.
