I'm not dead, just busy actually playing the game, lol. Anyway, the update is up. I'm actually playing in a similar style to you. Sounds like we're at a similar point too.

I wonder if you have any thoughts on the thread linked above ?

I was wondering about that thread. Is there nothing developers could do to make use of 2 tessellators on AMD hardware like the 7870 or on the PS4?

On that, how does tessellation work? It's obviously a technique that requires specific hardware and adds some rather impressive geometry, but what specific calculations/algorithms do they carry out (as in, I thought that GPUs were already fairly specialised and should have been capable of these types of calculations without dedicated tessellation units). Think of this as question 2

    on 01 April 2014

Well there is one thing the developers could do such as passing a high detailed mesh instead of using tessellation to generate extra quads and such.

Tessellation requires only one new fixed function stage and that would be the tessellator itself. For Directx 11 microsoft has introduced 2 new shader stages for the whole concept to work. A hull shader is first used to generate the geometry patch for the input of the tessellator stage. The tessellator stage then creates the higher order surfaces by performing a technique called "subdivision". The domain shader then calculates the vertex position of the subdivided points.

GPUs are still fairly specialized but the greater push to the convergence of CPUs and GPUs means that GPUs need to become more flexible in order to achieve their goals of GPGPU. It's still a good idea to have fixed function units because of performance implications and it's part of the DX 11 specs.

You have 1 question left ...

Have you used FXAA injector for anything? It's good for turning off AA in some PC games, and getting more of the performance geared towards other things. Then use that at the end.

I don't really have a point. But I've been messing with Deus Ex:HR. I like the yellowness. But I've turned off post processing and made it look a bit more golden and less yellow. It makes the particles stand out too! The problem is the dark spots are a maybe little bit too dark. There aren't any flashlight things in that game correct?

    on 01 November 2012

I don't think so. I can't remember any night vision augs either, sorry!
