It looks like I still have all the same Friends on the new 3DS. The Fire Emblem data may have been tied to the system, but I still have the same friend data. Speaking of, did the game arrive yet?

I got the game last week, finished Birthright and started Conquest.

      Wasn't Birthright just.....great?

      on 10 June 2016

      x
      Yes, very much.

      on 11 June 2016

      x
Seriously though, the game was quite hard despite playing on normal. And by hard I mean that there was a serious threat of dying. I think it was because I shuffled my units a lot and went with easy optional battles to round out the support conversations. I had hardly any units at or above level 20/5 when I got to the final few chapters and some of those characters hadn't been blessed by the RNG for their level ups. Half the work was done by my avatar (solo) and Ryoma (paired up) while the rest of the bunch had to be moved around more cautiously. I certainly didn't feel overpowered towards the end of the game.

Conquest feels already better and I am not even halfway through. Both in story and map design. I do wonder about that defense mission at the port though. Takumi as the boss has a droppable item, but his bow can hit on a distance of 1 and 2, and he's incredibly powerful for that point of the game. The item drop suggests that he is beatable, but who would get the job done? The item drop isn't even good (an elixir IIRC), but it's a matter of being able to do it.

      on 11 June 2016

      x
Ah yes, I love that map. Conquest has quite a few good ones, and really only one stinker.

Takumi is beatable, as are his subordinates (though Oboro is a bitch and a half). Effie, Arthur, and/or Silas should have enough defense/HP to survive and wear Takumi down, especially if Effie and Arthur are supporting each other. The trick is usually getting Effie down there fast enough, which requires not using her for a turn or two. There's a brief window when it should be okay to shuttle her with two faster characters for a turn, usually after Hinata suicides against Silas and/or Camilla, but it was a risk because of the constant reinforcements.

      on 11 June 2016

      x
I'm surprised to hear you had difficulty with Birthright though. I suspect you got RNG screwed, because even on Lunatic I only had one map where I had to sweat through the start (the map where you pop up in the middle of the enemies' training and are surrounded by high level promoted units)

      on 11 June 2016

      x
Well, the port map should be a lot easier the second time around when I know where and which enemies spawn. I think I had two turns left when I cleared the west side and four characters were over there, but none of them stood any chance against Takumi, so they remained idle. I had moved Effie to the east after starting with the west, because of Oboro (who I ultimately didn't manage to kill). Towards the end I had to retreat because the pegasi headed past my units to reach the point I had to defend. That wrecked my strategy, because I assumed that the pegasi would attack my units.

As for Birthright, some of the difficulty probably also stemmed from my impatience. I cleared the last few maps in 5-8 turns, but most units weren't durable enough to really move at that pace, making them fall further behind in EXP. It wasn't so much "how do I clear the map at all", but rather "how can it be done as a group effort and fast".

      on 11 June 2016

      x
Keep in mind of course that that was simply how I did it, but it was effective. I think using Silas, healed by Elise, should probably get the job done effectively too, although Takumi is much more powerful as a foe than a friend. As for Oboro, I found Camila made fairly short work of her, but even then Camila will take her lumps, so make sure Camila doesn't get mobbed.

      on 11 June 2016

      x
And yes, one of the many problems I had with Birthright was that too many of the maps were simply too big and open, without many conditions to deter you from simply making as many units as possible into mounted promotes.

I also hate the new playoff format. Not to take anything away from the Sharks, but the Blues seemed tired. They blew their chance when they didn't eliminate Chicago in 5 or 6, or Dallas in 6.

      on 27 May 2016

Wholly agreed. It's no secret that the Sharks planned to use the extra rest from the get go, especially since it's already been a very, very extended playoff season.

You're probably going to get all three anyways, but Birthright is hardly worth the time. Start it on Lunatic for anything approaching a challenge: it's easy, straightforward, and generally uninteresting. Conquest on the other hand is delightfully vicious at points. Hard Classic is putting me through my paces.

      x
Does this mean that Lunatic isn't ridiculously unfair this time around?

So how're you enjoying EOU 2 so far?

      x
It was good until I ran into the boss on the 23rd floor. At that point I got reminded that the original EO2 also had this puzzle boss. Reading up FAQs isn't enjoyable. Then I had to grind three levels to unlock a required skill. That didn't take long, but it put me on track to reach level 70 before I get to raise the cap.

I'll have to see how it develops. I guess I should read up on the dragon bosses as well and take a penalty to redistribute skill points in case that I get to level 70 too early, because if EXP go to waste anyway, might as well make the best of it.

      on 17 February 2016

      x
The good news is the dragons are easier than they were in any entry but IV. I don't think you can take them out of order this time though, or at least their missions always came up in the order Thunder-Ice-Fire for me.

      on 17 February 2016

      x
They better be easy. And yes, their quests unlock when you reach floor 27, 28 and 30, respectively. That fact popped up in my first forum search for the dragons.

      on 17 February 2016

      x
Just watch out for Blizzard King's Mirror Shield: it's not 100% predictable this time around, and it's killed me more than any other dragon as a result!

      on 17 February 2016

      x
Beat the Overlord, but then the final boss was even more annoying. The text I read up didn't specify why the barrier goes up again and at that point of the battle I really don't have the offense and defense to stand a chance. Reduced the difficulty just to get it over with. Finished the story in 45 hours.

When I unlocked the Storm Emperor quest, three of my characters had already level 70, so I ran from most battles on the path to the dragon. That beast was also mean and the story party just isn't good. I suppose you could turn it into something good with grimoire stones, but for that you first need to earn a lot of great stones in order to trade. But you don't get great stones if you don't have high enough levels, so... long story short, I went with picnic again. Feels so incredibly powerful when a sucky party can kill a dragon within three turns. You deal about five times the damage while only taking one fifth of the damage yourself.

I am at 66% item discovery now, so I guess it will take me another 25-30 hours to wrap it all up. I have to go through most floors again to map everything out, plus there are all the postgame quests and the sixth stratum too.

      on 18 February 2016

      x
Yeah, like I said the story party is good enough to beat everything, but it's far from optimal. Fafnir's the only reliable damage dealer, and he relies heavily on boost mode. Chloe's potentially stronger and more consistent than Fafnir, but she relies on someone to inflict ailments for her, and the story party isn't set up to do that. Reclassing Flavio scratches that itch, and his class can inflict a ton of damage with a different set up, but out of the box he's easily the odd man out, and shows that the game relies on teams more than on individual characters.

Okay, I couldn't bring myself to read it all, but it doesn't surprise me that it turned out this way. I assume you have seen that I compared the two a couple of days ago. I picked up Etrian Mystery Dungeon. Any tips? It seems pretty easy so far (fourth dungeon), but anything I should know, especially to prepare for the end game?

      x
The Landsknecht's link skills work like a status effect, so they are very valuable, especially if they hit the weakness of an enemy. You can even inflict all three elements to rack up a lot of damage. Like I said, it's like a status effect, so enemies are affected for a few turns. Gunners are very useful because of their binds and the distance they can attack from.

The storyline itself is never seriously difficult and the post game sucks. I think I've told you about it before.

The best tip for general play that I can give is that you should create as many party members as possible and put them into fortresses as soon as you have some (fortresses give more EXP). That makes it easy to swap to different classes and different skill builds without the need to grind. Also, buying the EXP+ meal is usually the best option and it doubles EXP gains for all active party members as long as the final blow to an enemy is dealt by someone who ate the food.

Don't sell valuable items, but that shouldn't be an issue because the storage at the inn is so big.

I doubt that you will have problems with this game, unless you want to tackle the postgame. But that's a lot of tedious gameplay towards the end. The first few postgame dungeons are bearable (the ones which house the three dragons and a couple of others), but the other two (I think it's seven in total) suck hard.

      on 02 February 2016

      x
Surprised to hear about the gunner: I tried one and wasn't getting much out of it, even after focusing on the first two binds, but I'll roll one back out. Is it better than the Hexer? I have to imagine so, since the Hexer was a waste of space so far...

      on 02 February 2016

      x
You are right, the gunner isn't good early in the game. Slow turn speed and the binds don't come in handy until you fight some battles against DOEs. I didn't even try a hexer because the class seemed so meh. The Gunner also gets more versatile down the line when you add elemental shots.

I used a runemaster early on, but that class needs a lot of skill points to become well-rounded. Probably better to create elemental-specific builds. But even then, you lack the binds. That's why I ended up prefering the gunner.

I played with landsknecht, protector, gunner and medic most of the time. It's a good balance, but you'll probably find something better. Landsknecht is good because of the link skills; once you've inflicted all three elements, you can attack with a dual strike and that adds up. Protector draws attacks which is really useful with the way the battles work; weaker units get struck down super quickly if you fight a group of enemies. The gunner disables enemies and then strikes their weaknesses, or just does solid damage with normal attacks that can double and critical with passive skills. The medic keeps your party alive and safe.

I think the sovereign could work as a replacement for the medic or maybe even the protector. As for the remaining classes, the landsknecht was just too good to be replaced and I wanted to keep the protector as well, so I didn't mess around much.

      on 02 February 2016

      x
Good tips. I was avoiding the protector just because I wanted to try an EO game without a tank, but I'll probably sub one in now that DOEs are rearing their heads.

I tried the Wanderer for a bit, since I don't remember that class from any previous game, but while it isn't bad it seems more suited to exploring maps than fighting, and barring any significant goodies that can only be reached by digging or swimming it looks like it's effectively a weaker Ronin. Haven't tried the Sovereign or Ninja yet: is the Ninja worth bothering with?

      on 02 February 2016

      x
You are going to need a protector because of summon traps. If you get by surrounded by a group of enemies that spawns in the room and you don't have an item to escape the floor or labyrinth, then you are in a really tough spot. High chances to get wiped out and lose your equipment. The Protector's Provoke is godly in such situations.

The ability to walk over water isn't needed. It's all randomly generated floors and there should always be a normal way into every room of a floor. So the Wanderer isn't good. I don't think the Ninja is either. The Sovereign has some sort of healing skills, so it could be used instead of a medic.

Honestly, the whole setup of the classes in this game doesn't resemble much of a balance. Protector is the easy choice for defense, Landsknecht is powerful and versatile because it can inflict on all elements which get added to everyone else's attacks, Gunner/Runemaster cover the distance, and then there's only one party slot left. Which for me was a Medic because I'd rather be safe than daring when exploring.

But like I said before, in this game you can afford to try out things without wasting much time, thanks to the EXP gains for benched characters in fortresses. You don't even have to worry about sacrificing two levels to redistribute your skill points, because you can create enough characters to cover several skill builds. In the end you'll be allowed to have 50 characters, so that's five per class.
