Just a thought: I think the reason why reviews are skewed towards the higher end is because the games you see reviewers often reviewing are the higher-end games by nature. There are hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of games that come out every year, and since reviewers only have enough time to review a few, they pick the better games that have received more media attention. This leads to them reviewing the higher crop of video games and giving them subsequently higher reviews.
