Ah, you are the guy I was looking for. Are you familiar with the SMART tests for a hard drive and what it means if the short self test failed?

After getting the fail result, I ran the more complicated test that was supposed to take 3 hours (according to the computer), and it failed 30 seconds in. It says something about a bad sector and that the sector has essentially been turned off.

The help it guided me to said it is imminent my hard drive will fail? Should I still be good to operate on the hard drive as long as I back up files or will it likely fail in the very near future?

Yeah by the sound of things your hard drive is at the end of the life cycle. You could run it in to the ground and there is a chance it will last another 6 months or so.

My suggestion is to go to your hard drive manufacturer site and see if its still under warranty. Most manufacturers have a warranty check where you enter the serial and it tells you if its still replacable for free.

I've exhcanged 3 hard drives like this myself and the odds are that if this is an internal drive, its still under warranty (3-5 years warranty by most manufacturers). If thats the case, you should file ann RMA, print a free shipping label and get a new drive in 3-4 weeks.

Do you know what, if any, plans Nvidia have for official 3D Play support for LG's passive 3D TVs? I'm liking what LG is doing with their 3D experience, so I'm looking at those.

Never mind, I think I found the TV I'll be going for. :-)

on 30 January 2012

Passive TV's are a good cost effective option and for 1080p 3D blurays are pretty good quality too. However for 720p 3D for gaming, you are looking at very high resolution loss. Essentially you are getting 720p resolution upscaled to 1080p and then 540p lines of resolution given to each line. I was considering these till I saw some gaming on them and then I changed my mind. You sure you don't want a projector? :)
720p 3D projector like Acer 5360 on a 50-60 screen would make your jaw drop in 3D and is very good for 2D as well.

on 30 January 2012

I'm sure, projectors aren't what I need at the moment. My room is crammed enough as it is. :-P
When did you see the passive TVs? LG has improved their solution to give just about the same 3D quality (resolutionwise) as what active TVs manage. :-)

on 30 January 2012

When I get a place with more available wall space I might consider it. :-)

on 30 January 2012

And now a 40" Sony EX720 is headed my way!

on 30 January 2012

This is the one I was looking in to purchasing as they had it for 799 during boxing week. New 3D TV I believe, but resolution loss is evident on any polarized TV set.

on 30 January 2012

Don't really know the what and how of that model, but LG released the update around august I think. Don't know if that model is compatible or if that particular TV had been updated.
I haven't actually seen it action so I can't tell you how good it is though. :-P

on 30 January 2012

I think it has more to do with passive 3D technology to begin with. I am not sure anyone can add anything to the TV which makes passive tech not lose half the resolution. But I've been proven wrong before...many times. :)

on 30 January 2012

Here's how it works: The "old" LG TVs gave you two 540px images for 1/200th of a second, one for each eye. The improved method gives you four 1080i images for every 1/200th of a second, two for each eye. The review I saw it in said it was an overall noticable improvement, though with a bit extra ghosting added.

I see. So essentially it's an optical illusion to fool the viewer he is seeing a higher resolution... I guess we are slowly getting there.

I am looking forward to Dual Link DVI equipped full HD @ 120hz projectors...whenever they decide to come out. Put 3 of those puppies together in portrait mode and you got a custom made 4K resolution 120 inch setup for $4000 bucks. :)

Not bad, not bad. :-D

I'm in the market for a good 42 inch 3D HDTV. You're the man to turn to. LCD, LED, Plasma? What do I go for? Anything bigger that 42 inch will probably be too big for the room I plan to put it in.

What do you want to base your TV around? 3D quality? 2D quality? Features? Price?

There are many TVs I could recommend that would fit in the 42-47 inch bracket however I need to know what is most important specs wise.

Got a 3DS?

I do not. It was cheap enough this boxing day but for some reason I am not feeling gaming in general. Maybe it has to do with the fact I turned 30 and feel old... :)

on 02 January 2012

oh stoop.. 30 is not old. when you hit 4o they your old. not old enough to have a mid life crsis

That would move some units for sure... yeah i thought about the same. instead of 99+15monthly they could make 20monthly. they would make more with it and more people would get it^^ Even at 15 per month, once holidays come and a possible price cut they should be getting enough money....
