Sony FY 2008 Q2 Results – Analysis – SONY BLEEDING – LOOKING BAD

in Sony Discussion on 28 November 2008

wow, this thread suddenly expanded... hahaAnyway, I'm being a bit optimistic, but I do think Sony Game will show a small profit in US$ for the holiday quarter. And again, those NET PROFIT numbers per item were based on calculations dating back to 2006-2007. So if you have time, read the previous threads that I have posted.Microsoft may be copying their pc strategy a bit - where they provide...

I'm being optimistic and say that even with the current exchange rates, they would break even or make some profit - because it is a holiday quarter.Maybe they reduce costs on the PS3 even further......

in Sony Discussion on 27 November 2008

That's good. We'll wait till Jan 09 to get the holiday quarter. But with the yen down, it may be entirely likely that the MORE PS3s they sell, THE MORE MONEY they may lose. There may not be a PS2 to offset some of those PS3 losses...though PSP hardware may be profitable enough to offset all those PS2 declines.last year same quarter, they sold 4.9 million PS3s.i think they are almost breaking even on...

    Microsoft EDD – Q1 FY 09 – end Sep 30, 2008 – SIMPLE ANALYSIS

in Microsoft Discussion on 27 November 2008

@ godogIn general (and in theory), yes, Live should be split up into monthly / quarterly revenue, bec the service is being provided monthly and the expenses are being incurred monthly as well.this would probably smooth the division's financials a bit, since they have an ONGOING revenue stream, as opposed to strictly hardware/software sales. But of course, that EDD division is full of so much other...

Yes. Please do post your calculations. Also, the original analysis is for the gaming division only - comparing to MSFT and Nintendo. But yes, Sony as a whole, is in a bit of trouble right now, financially.Their possible saving grace is either the GAMES (kinda unlikely) or MOVIES (if they get a big blockbuster or 2 in)Their financial division will obviously bleed money as well....

    @ KatinJinAgreed. Yen is worse now.But let's see what is in store and make some projections (you can use your own numbers herePS2 HW = 2 million @ $10 = $20PSP HW = 5 million @ $8 = $40PS2 SW = 20 million @ $2 = $40PSP SW = 25 million @ $2 = $50PS3 SW = 40 million @ $2 = $80Total = $230 millionLess 10% currency(yen)= $207 millionPS3 HW is the keySell = 4 millionLoss = ($60) per unitLoss of...

this is my understanding from EA's explanation (i actually talked to investor relations long time ago)..So, if Madden (for example) cost $60 (assume you bought it directly from EA)and it has an online component that EA will have to pay for (eg servers)..at an estimated time of 6 months..THEN EA, with their GAAP reporting has to report (and they should have a formula) like this:RevenueMonth 1 =...

twroogenerally accepted accounting principles...generally in accounting - you match the revenue and expenses..gaming example.if i was a game store and you "pre buy" a game for $50 from my store (that is not released yet, and therefore I don't have it in stock) - to be delivered 6 months laterthen if I am a public company and I have to report this transactionthen it is NOT revenuebecause GENERALLY...

Sony FY 2008 Q2 Results – Analysis – SONY BLEEDING – LOOKING BAD

in Sony Discussion on 26 November 2008

the big thing is the structural deficit.lets pretend they produced a blockbuster game that quarter. So if all our assumptions are relatively "correct", then if they produced a hit like MGS4 (1st party), then:Sales = 4 million unitsAssume profit is greater coz it is 1st party = $5 per unit (instead of $2)then that is still only $20 million, out of a loss of almost $400 millionLets even pretend they...

IF WE KEPT THE SAME ASSUMPTIONS, then the Game Division should have made:US$17(*) millionClearly, that is totally different from a loss of U$379 million. If we revise the profit/loss per unit of hardware or software, to reflect the currency fluctuation (I used 10%), then the results would be:US$(14)(*) million (LOSS)Again, that number is still way OFF.That is using the PS3 Hardware Loss of $60 per...

Maybe. We would never know. But based on EA numbers (which hosts games for PS3 and Wii apparently) - the GAAP numbers are different from their "internal" numbers.Just to sum up again:For EA (PS3)They report a GAAP Revenue. However, for comparison (unit) purposes, they report a different number-- reflecting the one time revenueeg. Madden = 2 million units PS3 (*example only)they report their number...
