Well just finished the "Law" (and Bad end) route. Hopefully more of the story is explained in the other routes as I finish.

      x
That's what I've heard. How did you like it? I'm only going to kill Yuriko for Tayama right now.

      on 03 August 2013

      x
Just in neural, the longest route.
Story-wise, I actually really liked the game. Game really doesn't fall into too many tropes and really caught me off guard a couple times. Couple fake-outs in there that I enjoyed as well, but I felt that the Chaos and Law routes seemed too...uhh extreme? Of a plot jump when they get locked. Neutral seems the most fleshed out.

      on 04 August 2013

      x
Law and Chaos are always pretty extreme. How would you rate the game btw?

      on 05 August 2013

Moves up to a solid 8. It's a very well made game that fits within the bounds of tradition (though it may be restricting at times) with a very nicely crafted environment and scenario. One glaring thing I feel had to be fixed the world map. You can barely get anywhere if you don't look it up online. (I now think that Mikado being menu-based was necessary because new people would get lost in the castle) The issues such as the sprite/model and the 1st/3rd person dissonance does take some getting used to, but I'm beginning to see that as more of a budget constraint if anything. Strange though after they made some good 3D explorable areas, you'd think they might have put better use to that rather than just being "explorable" such as being able to see it in battles rather than looking at the same backdrop. So overall, it's not a JRPG that pushes bounds, but does very well within them. Might go check out Persona now that I got used to some of the mechanics and terminology.

      on 05 August 2013

      x
The world map is kind of annoying. the game needed better directions and some way to look at the map and see the areas labeled (though you can find one online). Also at the point I'm at the game's been too easy for a while...granted I have 252 magic now lol. And Persona is different but good as well.

Thoughts on the game so far-Dang it this game's hard. 1st dungeon I went in I died to the 2nd normal enemy. The battle system is pretty deep, but the depth is bought with some serious complexity that can be troublesome to get used to. Seems that the game is designed so that running away/avoiding enemies is discouraged, and that's where the "grindy" part of the experience comes into play. This isn't as much of a problem as I thought though, for 2 reasons. One is that even low level enemies are useful in this game for fusing and elemental attacks so encountering them isn't as much of a pain as there is potential reward. The other being that the battle transitions aren't as obtrusive as something like Tales is (I hate that screen with the special effects). I really like the atmosphere of the gameworld, but there is some dissonance that is the result of the switching from 1st to 3rd person as well as the contrast between the sprite and model design. Could be fleshed out better. I just hit Tokyo, so looks like the tutorial stage is over. Overall, it's in the 7s for me so far. Maybe it'll improve once I actually start exploring the Tokyo regions.

      x
Since I thought Nocturne was easy I wonder how I'll fare :P I heard some people saying it's harder than Nocturne. Oh and if you like unobtrusive battle transitions, you'd probably like Tales of Graces F since the transition barely lasts a second. The game is supposed to get better once you start going through Tokyo so just stick with it.

      on 22 July 2013

      x
Game's getting better, Tokyo really opens the game, and the battle system is getting a bit more filled with options, but I wish that the actual combat and areas had the same level of polish the dungeon areas did. Some of this stuff just looks bad. It's not as much an issue with the graphics more as it is the presentation of the art style.

The game's a bit too "old-school" for it's own good. The way they choose to present it doesn't help the general feeling of the atmosphere and intensity of each battle. And dang do these battle get pretty intense. The difficulty and intensity of the battles is most assuredly the high point of the game.

Do SMT games have multiple endings?

      on 23 July 2013

      x
I'm getting the game tomorrow. I'll have to see what you mean but after playing several SMT games using sprites the battle presentation won't be an issue for me. I don't know what you mean that the areas don't have polish though. Which areas? Also yeah these games have multiple endings. This game has a Chaos, Law, Neutral, and a bad ending. I'm gonna try going for Neutral though the window for getting it is thin. If I don't manage it I'll try aiming for Chaos then leaving Neutral for NG+.

      on 23 July 2013

      x
The areas that require you to scroll through a menu to travel, visual novel style. It really messes up the "kinetic" and "static" differentiation for me.

      on 23 July 2013

      x
Oh. Isn't that just in Mikado though, ie. a small part of the game?

Ah well, I went ahead and got it anyways. Hopefully I'm not too turned off by the 1st person sprite battles. Going in.

      x
Cool. It's not really a big deal and you can see all the reviewers liking the battles. I avoided SMT Strange Journey for a while before I played it since the whole game was first person but realized that it didn't bother me much and well SMT is SMT, still good.

Sell me on SMTIV. I don't want to miss the CN deal, but I'm really not sold on the game yet. Is there a lot of grinding required? How easily can you run from battles? (by which I mean not be forced into the battle menu in the 1st place)

      x
Be going to my gamestop today for Pikmin trying. Might pick it up.

      on 20 July 2013

      x
I actually don't have the game yet (I'm getting it in just a few days) but if it's like Nocturne then minimal grinding is required (people overblow that game's difficulty btw). I heard the beginning is hard in SMT IV but it gets manageable as you get more demons and such. Running from battles isn't too hard in Nocturne, they might have made it a little easier, IDK. The battles aren't random anymore so things might be more manageable that way as well. What do you mean by "not be forced into the battle menu in the 1st place" though?

      on 20 July 2013

      x
Oh and the game supposedly gets a lot better once you hit Tokyo.

Like Pokemon or Tales, are you forced into a battle transition than you have to go through a menu and select run to get out of?

      on 20 July 2013

      x
Yes. Is there an issue with that? lol.

      on 20 July 2013

      x
You don't really have to grind in SMTIV much. However, I would advise that you don't run from the monsters that chase you. If they catch up to you and get the first strike because of it, even if they are weak they can kill you in one turn. It's best to try and get the first strike any time you can. The battle UI in SMTIV is rather simple, giving you a few options. First would be skills where your regular attack, magic, and physical skills will be listed. There's item, talk (to recruit demons), swap (demons in your party, you can switch in battle, but may result in a lost turn), flee (to run away, it tells you at the bottom what your chances of running away are), and next (to skip your turn). Demons wont have the talk or item options. A skill can allow a demon to use items, however one skill is for healing and support, the other are offensive items. So it would take up two of your demons' skill slots to give it full access to your items. For running away, there's also a skill that guarantees that if you can run away from a battle, you will (costs MP).
Also, there's an auto-battle system for when you want to just simply barrage the enemy with your 0 MP regular attacks (usually when the battle is easy). It cuts out the animations and damage so it makes those battles go by quickly.
If there's one thing you must do in SMTIV is that you must constantly be recruiting demons and fusing them. That way you take out a lot of the grinding you would need to do to beat some bosses.

Vesperia is actually pretty bland. (Design wise)

The dungeons are so linear. At this point I'm just playing it for the battle system. How's ToGf?

      x
Dungeons in ToGF are solid. A lot a have puzzles, a few more confusing than most. Most JRPG dungeons are somewhat linear and ToGF is somewhere in between linear and open-ended. Story is just OK. Nothing too special but not bad. What saves it are the characters and character interactions (including skits). Skits are probably a bit more amusing in the Future Arc. There are a lot of them too (like all Tales games) so that's good. The battle system is awesome and doesn't use TP and instead uses CC. It's actually pretty different from the other Tales I played. The Title system is the best I've seen. Basically you can get a lot of Titles and they have like 5 things they can give you, like stat boosts, more artes, damage increases to artes, HP increases, more CC, and other sorts of things. Plus Artes have their own added effects too like increasing material drops or cutting damage above a certain limit by 50% or something. It's a good system, should be in every Tales game really.

      on 20 June 2013

      x
The game can be pretty brutal on harder difficulties. I normally try to play on Chaos (hardest difficulty) and bosses are crazy. I restarted a couple of them like 20-50 times just to beat them on Chaos loool. But I've started to get tired of that and if I can't win I just lower the difficulty a notch. The benefit from playing on harder difficulties is more EXP and SP (used to upgrade your Titles) though, so it's a good idea to play on harder difficulties.

      on 20 June 2013

      x
Oh and about skits, this game has some of the best in the series. I can't really pinpoint any specifically good ones but most are generally very good.

Also I've been playing the game for a long time now but it feels like it's never going to end lol. I'm at the end of the Future Arc at like 105+ hours but I'm doing side stuff now (not Trophies though) and I haven't even gone through the major optional dungeon yet. I want to wrap things up soon.,,

      on 20 June 2013

      x
Thinking that Tales should get rid of the floting head skits. Love em, but it kills the pacing and forces standstill. I want to do what I was doing and get good characterization is parallel. They should really try having more than 1 character on the screen at a time now that Xillia adopted the whole behind the back view (kinda like Xenoblade but not exactly what I'm thinking) and have skits that way. After a while, it just really feels like a leftover staple from when hardware was weak.

      on 28 June 2013

      x
Graces F has full body skits which is a step up. I don't really think it kills the pacing and I don't mind stopping for a skit since I usually enjoy them (even more now since they're voiced) so whatever.

      on 28 June 2013

      x

Cool, Be sure to play on the highest difficulty you can handle for more SP (to build up your titles) and EXP. You can unlock Evil mode by fighting 300 battles on Hard and Chaos by fighting 200 on Evil btw.
