Why did MGS 4 fail to move consoles?

Actually it was 1.3 million in it's first day. And 3 million in some two weeks, even though VG Chartz doesn't admit it.

And console sales went up 700% in Japan and 180% in America (on the first week). That's impressive!

shipped =/= sold.  that is why it isn't listed at 3 million on this site.  not that konami cares to much.  those retailers had to pay konami for the game, we pay the retailers.
