I like the octoganal sticks, it means you can push it to the 8 corners really easily, and if you want to go slightly in-between you can adjust from there.
With the circular sticks you have to find the top/bottom/left right by adjusting using what happens on screen, so if your thumb naturally moves it slightly to the left when you try straight up (I have long thumbs, might be somthing to do with it) you have to adjust.
