Just beating out Sonic Mania, this is still my favourite 2D Sonic game. Featuring three playable characters, lots of large, well designed stages, with multiple paths and even...the multiplayer...but at least that has an awesome prototype Escape from the City music track hidden away. Speaking of multiplayer, just like Sonic 2, you can play the main game with a friend and that's how I first beat the game, relying on help from Tails to get me through some tough bosses. Thanks to a nice save game feature, this was the first Sonic game where I actually collected all the Chaos (and Super) Emeralds and got to play with Super/Hyper Sonic.
