If nobody's said it yet, the PC Engine SuperGrafx is a very worth candidate.

I actually know very little about the PC Engine (TurboGrafx-16 around here) or its follow up. Never even saw one in person, not even at retail. I know it was popular overseas. What made the SuperGrafx so bad?

TG16 is great. So is The Turbo Express but SuperGrafx is the lamest attempt as a successor ever. TG16 is technically an 8-bit machine with its CPU. Genesis was a real threat so they rushed a 16-bit machine but it didn't really feel like a huge leap. Think of Gamecube to Wii in tersm of leap. Or maybe PS360 to Wii U. Games cost $100. Only 5 games made. SNES was a year away and Genesis was out.
