Regarding 3DS vs Switch sales in Japan, I think Switch can catch up if Nintendo play their cards right with price cuts and don't cut its life short prematurely. Switch will have almost all 3DS's big guns, plus a few extra like Splatoon. Only the much cheaper price and Monster Hunter are on 3DS's side, and while both are big factors, I think they can be compensated for.

3DS did fall off a cliff (RIP Quickrick) after year 3 in Japan so Switch should start gaining ground on it from this point onward.

The big price cut and first revision in the first 1.5 years caused 3DS to be a bit front loaded while Switch went 2.5 years before getting those (Lite sorta acts as both) so the sales trajectory should be different.
