I think it would be better of, actually.
If you only play online, you don't bring as many people in. When you focus on local multiplayer, you can bring other people that don't have the hardware or the game into it. To play online, all the parties have to have the system and the game already. It's a closed circle.
This is how the Wii(that everybody hates now) really took off.. If Wii Sports had been online, nobody would have cared, at all..
