Yeah pretty sure all you need to do is pay a $10-$20 fee to get developer mode, then you can put emulators on it.
I finally took the plunge with my Switch and now I can play GB/GBC/GBA/Snes/Megadrive/N64 and even DS games on it. Nintendo's taking far too long to bring their games over. Been playing Pokemon Prism, first pokemon romhack I've played but it's pretty great, especially seeing new pokemon in the GBC style.
