I think that some people get turned off by a game that is more of a maze than a straight shot to the finish. Some people really don't like backtracking as to them it seems pointless, wasteful, or makes them feel upset that they couldn't figure it out. Personally, back tracking is one of my favorite parts of a Metroid game as it rewards exploration and allows you to take time to smell the roses as you investigate every block and impeded path. But I do believe there are plenty of people who don't want to have to think while they're playing.
