Part of this equation assumes that the game is really, really good.  I could say I want an open world Zelda game.  But if it was as well made as Breath of the Wild, then I'd pay at least $360, because that is what I paid at launch to get a Switch + BotW.  On the other hand if the open world Zelda was more like Twilight Princess...well I paid $40 used for the game and even that felt like a bit much.

Likewise, I didn't own a computer, but I bought a $1000 computer just to play Ultima Online.  Technically the first online game I played was Diablo, but it was hacked to hell (pun intended).  Ultima Online was the first stable and playable online game I ever encountered.  It was also my first MMO.  The whole experience was just overwhelmingly amazing, and that was the only reason I bought the computer.  (Yeah I tried to justify the purchase, but mostly I used it to play Ultima Online).  So if a game is good enough, I know I can go up to $1000, but it has to be an amazing, never-encountered-before, experience.

So here are some games I'm looking for:

1) A full RPG with exploration and quests and an awesome story, but the battles play just like Final Fantasy Tactics.  The best I can describe it would be an RPG worthy of FFVI or Octopath Traveler, but the battles are like Final Fantasy Tactics.  $300

2) Start with a 2D game like Link to the Past, but with modern graphics.  I want this game to have both a "story mode" and a "random mode".  In the story mode you go on an amazing adventure through tons of different terrain: Desert, Jungle, Outer Space, Back in Time, etc... and a fantastic story develops and you go through it.  "Random Mode" is like story mode only the overworld and dungeons are randomized and you can choose map size and difficulty, but the story is deemphasized.  The combat needs to be amazing with a huge variety of items that all help your combat ability in some way. $500

3) An actual 2D Mario game hand crafted by professional developers.  It needs to have the feeling of exploring different worlds like Mario 3 did.  It also needs to have modern graphics and tight level design like Mario 3 did.  It needs to have a bunch of powerups I've never seen before.  $250

4) A Katamari game with music and level design that was at least as good as the first Katamari game.  It also needs at least 50 hours worth of content before I get into repeat play.  Every level needs to be highly polished and fun.  $350
