Even if they didn't own all those brands they are still bigger than BMW and Mercedes Benz.  Just the VW Golf alone has sold over 30 million units since its introduction in 1974.

Most likely. Although in terms of brand alone, as opposed to the company as a whole, I don't think there's too much in it between Volkswagen, BMW & Mercedes. It's pretty clear that the source in the OP isn't particularly credible though.

That top 100 list makes no sense outside of the top 10 on that list.  No way should the Home Depot and Charter be ranked above Walmart.  Also PesiCo is bigger then The Coca Cola Company so Pepsi should be in the top 100 if Coca Cola is.  Also LG is almost as big as Samsung and the Hyundai Motor Group is the third highest motor manufacturer by volume after Toyota and Volkswagen so LG and Hyundai should have been on the list.  The VW Group manufactured 10.38 million vehicles in 2017 which is over twice as many vehicles as BMW and Mercedes Benz combined since they both only made slightly more then 2.5 million vehicles that year.
