That leveling system is quite old, and if incorporated properly it can be pretty satisfying. Thing is, most games respawn enemies, so you can game the system. Funny you mention Gothic, since Gothic does not respawn enemies at random, rather after crucial points in story (IIRC after chapters) and they are all placed by designers, not at random.

There will always be ways to game a system, in XP system it's usual XP farming...unless you limit a player in certain ways, whether it's ticking clock on your main quest, non-respawing enemies, XP only for finishing quests, one guild refusing to teach you if you belong to other guild...

Gothic is the only game that ever got everything right. Level system and game design were perfect. KCD very much captures the spirit of Gothic in its design and adds polish that Gothic never had. If only they hadn't fucked up with the leveling. Though it might just be a small thing. As long as they don't do the most retarded thing any RPG could do and level enemies with you.

I still consider Gothic 1&2 (and to some degree 3) to be best single character open-world action-RPGs ever made, though they are about 8.5/10 in my book. They had great topography design, exploration, characters, enemies and story, but I always thought there is lot of space for improvement when it comes to RPG mechanisms.
