People say 'wait til Avatar gets a rerelease before the sequel', but my question is will Disney allow that? 1) First Avatar is tainted by Fox whereas Disney having Avengers Endgame to remain the top spot under their roof sounds better and 2) It's been so long that the sequel probably doesnt need people to understand the original Avatar.  Just my thoughts.

This exactly.  It was still playing in almost 1,000 theaters when it added theaters back in.  That's still a single continuous release.  In the case of Avatar's Special Edition, Avatar's initial release was no longer playing in any theaters at all when the "Special Edition" released.  For some reason, people like to point to the Endgame expansion as some sort of "cheap trick" for a movie that has been in theaters for 3 months to have beaten Avatar's 8 month total gross.
