And it's also interesting how popular are Metroidvania games nowadays, specially given the little love that publishers have given them for years.

Publishers go after the big bucks.  The Call of Duties, The Battlefields, or whatever other trend is on top.  I think fans of Metroidvanias are very vocal, but don't compare to the sheer number of mainstream gamers who eat up the yearly iterations of the big blockbuster titles.
