If the past years have taught us anything it's that it's absolutely irrelevant what happens in US politics unless you're part of the top 1%. Fighting against evil is meaningless because the majority of the population is either blind to it or doesn't care. The US hasn't been a democracy for some time now and since the people in power are only interested in consolidating and increasing their own power it will never change. Every week that passes I'm more glad that I haven't been born into that oligarchic hell hole they call the USA.
I've blown through many many irony detectors whenever the USA tries to lecture countries like Russia and China on democracy and freedom.
If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.
