I have a feeling that the writers behind this movie may have been driven (and maybe Phoenix as well) by the sustained admiration for Heath Ledger's performance and the challenge and the question of: "Could we possibly make something that will make people go 'they really did something with the Joker that matches Ledger's performance'."
