The Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligent Life

If extraterrestrial intelligent life exist and if they can travel between the stars; why would they talk to us earthlings? We don't stop to have a conversation with a caterpillar. I'm just sayin, the reason we haven't communicated with aliens yet is because we're not smart enough and civilized yet.
