I don't see a reason for these walking simulator games. A great story doesn't need a video game if its just walking around and interacting with stuff. Write a book or make a movie instead. Fun gameplay is always what developers should strive for. A good story doesn't make your game replayable, gameplay does.

A great story can be even greater in a video game because of the immersion. When you watch a movie, you feel like you're seeing people do something. When you play a game, you feel like you're doing something yourself. A lot of stories benefit from that.

Why should EVERY developer strive for fun gameplay and replayability? Isn't variety a great thing for the industry? Video games will only be considered art by the general public once they stop just being toys and begin to branch to different paths. Movies, for example, started becoming more important to the population once they began telling compelling stories instead of just being technical show-off to entertain people who hadn't even seen moving images. That doesn't mean fun movies stopped being made, Transformers is a great example. The same thing is happening to games at this very moment.

Oh, and btw, something doesn't need to be fun to be entertaining or compelling.
