I think the reason why some are picking Smash is because even though we expected Smash Bros. to sell well, did most expected Smash Bros. Ultimate to successfully literally carry the Switch's holiday season? To help the Switch sell the most units in a month ever (1.77 million in a month) in this generation AND break a record as the best-selling exclusive for a month, over the likes of 2010's Halo: Reach, 2018's Spider-Man, etc.?

To me, I think Pokemon Let's Go should get a shout out. For a game that has been maligned at times by hardcore fans and judged more as a game it was NOT, its selling well for what it is, a transitional game that is a Pokemon Yellow remake with Pokemon Go elements. And it did its job, help sell Switch units in a crucial part of the fiscal year.

Monster Hunter World did really well as a game that bridged the Western audience and the Japanese audience and bring the franchise into the mainstream. With a more streamlined gameplay experience and more emphasis in online multiplayer, the game maintained what made Monster Hunter what it is while bringing in new players that previous games couldn't.

Super Mario Party is also one to consider. After previous installments fell flat in terms of quality, Super Mario Party was a back-to-basics type of game that actually worked out well, despite a small number of boards. Surprisingly, it helped Pokemon Let's Go and Smash Bros. Ultimate carry the Switch through the holidays in 2018.
