I can only guess what Retro has been working on for the last 5 years. I remember pondering this exact question back in 2015 hoping that Nintendo would give a Metroid Prime reveal back then with Retro's name attached. All that was being talked about back then were rumors that Retro was working on a Diddy Kong Racing sequel which I am glad turned out to be unsubstantiated seeing as how most of the characters from the first DKR are now IP owned by Microsoft. Honestly, does anybody have hard evidence that Retro has been working on a Star Fox racing game? It sounds to me like an even more B-rated title than DKR. If Nintendo wanted a sci-fi racer then why not have Retro work on an F-Zero game? After the lackluster effort that was Star Fox Zero, I have zero interest in seeing a spin-off for that franchise right now and I kind of doubt that Nintendo would endorse such a project.

If the Star Fox racer is just another rumor without a lot of credibility I would probably just disregard it. It seems way more likely to me that Retro has simply been working as an
adjunct developing house for Nintendo's various major AAA titles like BotW and Mario Universe for that past couple of years. We know that Monolith was helping out with BotW and so it seems likely to me that Retro probably also got pulled off whatever projects they were working on to help make sure that the Switch launch was as seamless as possible. Nintendo needed the Switch to be an absolute hit and we knew how hard of a time they were having developing games in HD on the Wii U. I absolutely believe that Nintendo threw everything they had at making 2017 a blockbuster year and probably used every studio at their disposal for tasks like porting Wii U titles and doing odds and ends for the big AAA titles. None of this stuff would have necessarily been credited to Retro Studios either. Now that the Switch is finally a surefire a success, Retro can get back to working on something that they can own and put their name on. At least that is my personal best guess.

What I know for certain is this: Nintendo finally is showing evidence that they have learned from the Federation Force and Other M disasters and now know that they either need to make a high-quality AAA Metroid Prime game or just not touch the franchise anymore. Fans of Metroid see their franchise as being the sci-fi version of Zelda and unless Nintendo can deliver a Metroid Prime game that hits in the same ballpark as BotW then whatever comes out will be a disappointment and will just do more harm to the franchise. At least that is what I gathered from this address. Overall, I have a good feeling about the direction of MP4 even though it means a longer wait.
