So.what has retro been doing last 5 years?

Well, the big rumour/'leak' last year was that a Star Fox racing game was in development and potentially scheduled for 2019. Kotaku ran the most detailed report, which suggested a second project had been in development for even longer - but that this second project also enountered severe difficulties and likely would be cancelled.

Given Retro weren't given Prime 4 in the first instance, I can only assume that in 2017, Retro Studios were unavailable for Metroid Prime 4 development duty - suggesting they had at least one project on the go. It's highly likely that Retro have spent at least some of the last five years working on a project which has been cancelled, as rumours and reports suggested in late spring/early summer last year. Rumours suggest we've got one of two scenarios:

1) At least one major project (Star Fox GP or the unnamed title) at Retro was cancelled last year, leaving them free to take over Metroid Prime 4 development.

2) Star Fox GP is nearly finished, the second project was either cancelled early in 2018 or never existed, and now they are taking on Prime 4 development.

I think the second one is the right scenarios. Btw it'sad to hear so bad news, but i'm also glad to see Nintendo doing this, they preferred to inform us than keep it secret
