The thing is that Nintendo games are actually not universally loved. If they were, Nintendo consoles would have been consistently selling like Sony consoles over the last few generations. Instead, they've had a pretty rough ride until the Switch came along and that's probably due to the improved third party support this time around. They need that, or they need a gimmick like the Wii was or the portability that the Switch offers. Their own games just aren't enough, no matter if their fans gobble them up or not, and I believe that this is true for the other two big players as well. This isn't the eighties where Nintendo seemed to be the only viable choice because there wasn't really anyone else doing what they were doing. People have options now and you have to deliver a complete package.
