Games are just starting to become more demanding as this generation progresses forward and highly generic engines like UE4 only exasperate the issues ...

Just Cause 4 is another recent example where base SKUs are straight chugging on the game and it gives upgraded SKUs a run for their money. Dynasty Warriors 9 was another performance disaster ...

UE4 is a terrible engine and no AAA developer should even think about touching it for high end graphics technology projects and it's just sad the developers behind Days Gone, Crack Down 3, FF VIIR, KH III and Gears 5 are using it when the publishers behind them could easily afford to make their own in-house customized solutions that perform better for their own cases ...

Funny, our minds have gone to two different places here. You're saying games today are more demanding, I'm asking what is so demanding about Soul Calibur VI? I mean this is just a 1-on-1 Arcade fighting game. In theory the 6th gen consoles should be able to handle this gameplay.

Did you see the Just Cause 4 video at Digital Foundry? I was actually impressed how well it works on base hardware. A fairly stable 30 fps given the action and scale of that game.

I have mixed feelings about UE4 when projects turn out like Soul Calibur VI. I really think its a matter of optimization, because some of the best looking games this gen are also UE4. I mean Gears 4, MKX, Injustice 2, Hellblade, Fortnite, Dragon Ball, Spyro, and Sea of Thieves are good looking games that use the engine in different ways. Street Fighter V deservers an honorable mention for solid visuals, but its load times are painful and the game in general feels souless.

Days Gone, Crackdown 3 and Gears 5 seem like they will make good use of the engine as well. I wouldn't say its a terrible engine at all.
