A scope works the same as binoculars, although maybe you have to be closer with the gun scope than with the binoculars. I'm using the longest scope on the sniper rifle.
Damn what a waste. I just did the Maverick style mission and R* cut the fun part so ridiculously short that it was completely pointless. It doesn't even leave an option to actually play. Then of course the standard shootout nonsense at the end. I was expecting witty banter, smokey rooms, tense battles, studying expressions, finding tells, nope. Can't last more than 90 seconds or the kids might tune out.
Edit: You are right, you do need the binoculars to get the quality info. You can only study unknown animals through a weapons scope. More hassle!
