After now having played the game for many hours, I'm honestly baffled by the fact that nobody who reviewed this game seems to have paid any mind as to how atrociously cheap the AI is in this game.

Instead of operating on any sort of cone based field of vision, they all seem to simply have a rather generous radius in which they will detect absolutely everything the player does. As long as you're within this radius, it's completely irrelevant if the AI is facing you, or even if there are solid walls separating you. I suspected this was the case earlier, but confirmed it as a certainty after testing multiple times putting on my mask in scenarios with only one NPC around. I would do this from positions well behind them, and barriers that would prevent said NPC from even being visible to me on screen. The result was that they would instantly comment as soon as I put on the mask, and again whenever I took it off.

Not only is this massively immersion breaking, in what is otherwise such a stunningly realized world, but it also, far too often, results in you getting shoehorned into gunfights you not only didn't ask for….but took every available measure to actively avoid. This is incredibly frustrating.
