CryEngine 3 was used for the console port of Crysis, the same engine that was used for Crysis 2 and 3. Hence, they used the engine that was optimized for consoles, CPUs with more cores, etc.

I'm no expert but I assume they were able to transfer the game code and make tweaks so the game would be less resource intensive, but made some visual improvements as well due to new features in the engine. Hence, it makes sense to stick with the more modern engine given it fixed the hardware issue you're referring to.

If anything, its a shame they weren't developing Crysis 1 on CryEngine 3 for PC as well. It would have generated more money for them, would run better and that could have been the version ideal for a future console port.

There was also a few things lost in that transition though.
Crysis 1 on CryEngine 2 had a very demanding rendering pipeline hence why the original game couldn't get downported to last gen consoles... It was like Crytek wanted the best of everything, rather than make a heap of visual compromises like they did with Crysis 2.

Hopefully we get what we want at some point... Port the games to CryEngine 5.5 and let them shine on the Playstation 4 Pro, Xbox One X and PC.
