I would agree with this all the way.  All of the big companies are guilty of this.

However Sony kind of asks for criticism.  It tries to distinguish itself from Nintendo especially by saying how much better the graphics are in the Sony games.  I personally think the graphical difference between Sony in Nintendo is minor, and at the same time I really don't care about these graphical downgrades compared to an E3 presentation.  But a person who is going to nitpick Sony vs. Nintendo graphics can also nitpick when their is a downgrade compared to E3.

Well there's nothing wrong with being confident in your own companies ability or games. They're supposed to boast and hype their consoles and games, even what they say isn't true.  That's the nature of marketing, basically they're all glorified car salesmen when you think about it. I don't have a problem with Microsoft/Sony/Nintendo or others boast about themselves/or their games really.

Effective Marketing = Honest Marketing

A sure way to piss off customers is to lie to them, especially if it is your product's main selling point.  In fact the companies can get away with BS easier when it isn't the main selling point of the product.  But when it comes to the main selling point, honesty is hugely important, even when it comes to cars.

"My Prius isn't very powerful."  Not really a huge complaint, because people don't buy a Prius for power.

"My Prius only gets 35mpg when they advertised 45mpg."  That is a huge complaint.  In fact 35mpg would be great for a lot of cars, but if someone expects 45mpg on their Prius, then they will be really pissed if they only get 35mpg.  This is the sort of thing that can ruin a company.

Graphics is supposed to be one of Sony's main selling points.  When they lie on graphics, customers get pissed.  And I agree they are definitely not the only offender.  Lots of companies do this, but graphics is supposed to be hugely important for Sony, so they are going to get criticized more when they downgrade their graphics.

When did Sony say their games have better graphics than other games?

Sony advertises their graphics all the frikkin' time.  Here is one example out of many.
