If the payments would benefit Trump's campaign, they should be registered as campaign finances. And they were not.

He plead guilty but that doesn't mean it was a crime. The bank fraud and other things were the serious offenses. He could have been looking at a lot longer than 3-5 years.  But the prosecutors didn't really care about that what they want is something on Trump. So they got Cohen to plead guilty to something connected to Trump even though there is a good chance a crime hadn't been committed. And even if there had been the maximum penalty for not reporting something as a campaign expense is a fine. It's not a big deal. Obama's campaign was fined for the same "crime" having been committed. At the end of the day I can guarantee you that nothing of substance will come out of this. At most the Trump campaign but not trump personally will be fined a few hundred thousand dollars.
