Oh yes, forget an accurate portrayal, let's just cast somebody who doesn't remotely fit the part because they're popular.

Because it worked so well for GitS and Exodus.

Ha! If they were to unnecessarily shoehorn a minority actor/actress into a franchise and that were to cause backlash, I'm sure you'd hold the same opinion about companies not giving into vocal minority outrage. Am I right?

Scarlett Jo sells tickets. Simple as.

My opinion. It shouldn't matter either way, whoever is best for the roll, best for the production and so on. Cast an old Asian lady, if she can pull it off and be true to the character so be it. Short of cloning the real life trans the film is based on you can never close the gap to reality far enough for it to matter and all that should really matter is capturing the soul of the person, something Johansson is qualified to do and further more I'm sure this person would be happy they have such a beautiful and talented actress like Johansson playing the role, quite possibly the image they saw themselves being.

As for Ghost in the shell, the creator said, and it's pretty clear watching the anime, that the character was based of European, as the world was  a multicultural future. Something the outrage brigade didn't understand, perhaps because most outrage mobs aren't part of or have any interest in supporting the things they bash. Then creators, companies or brands give in and alienate their own audience for non supporting consumers, they loose money, fans and change the very thing they created to be something entirely different than their original vision or that of what is wanted by actual, interested consumers. Hence, Get woke and go broke.

Glad they aren't giving in and this director has the forsight to weather out the storm that will be short lived as it is unsustainable to make everything politically or social correct at the expense of quality and that dolla dolla bill.

Tiffany Haddish isn't NEARLY as popular as Sco Jo, yet Girls Night made more money on OW than Rough Night did during its entire run.

And GitS and Exodus flopped big time thanks in no small part to the whitewashing backlash they had going in. I'd argue casting white actors in those movies only hurt them, not the other way around.

Isn't the point of being an actor to play something you're not?

No. That definition is deeply flaughed. A 6 year old kid can't play the role of a maniacal serial killer. He can try, but he would fail miserably. And that's basically him playing something he is not. So your point of view of imvalin.

The goal of an actor is to play a role effectively and convincingly. And to do so requires actor to be the same gender, race, and age of the character. A 6"4 black dude with six packs can't play a teenage Asian school girl no matter how good an actor he is.

This.
