They don't really have momentum, at least not even close as much as their competitors.

They do have momentum though.
They have brought 5 studios under their umbrella, many of which already had projects going on anyway.

Don't forget how solid the Xbox One X hardware is relative to it's direct competition... And the subtle hint of Scarlett at E3.

To have momentum now they had to start doing shit years ago but they didn't. Why would you think that they suddenly care now when everything is lost anyway, when they didn't even care when they were still in the race?

Well. You aren't wrong, they would most certainly have had to start doing shit years ago... And this year we saw a sneek peak of that.

Xbox isn't even close as strong as a brand as Sony and Nintendo so the only thing they can do to close that gap is starting a new gen a lot earlier, having an unbeatable price and throwing out constant first and 3rd party exclusives.

I agree. The Xbox 360 though was a strong brand that gave both Sony and Nintendo a run for it's money.
But Microsoft lost a little of that glamour with the Xbox One.
But it is what it is... Console market is very cyclic.

So either they're completely stupid and underestimate their competition or they just don't give a fuck and just treat Xbox as a nice little business on the side. The latter of which is much more likely and what I said before.

Yeah.  I would not exactly start making assertions that one of the wealthiest companies is "stupid". - Do they get everything right every-time? Shit no. But neither does Sony or Nintendo.
Just need to give credit where credit is due for all companies.

Microsoft is clearly holding a few cards for next-gen, the Halo tech demo was a hint towards that in my opinion with some of the rendering techniques employed in that demonstration.
