God of War is probably the best game of this generation so far

The gameplay is definitely not generic hack and slash. The combat is way more complex and super satisfying where each encounter is like a mini boss fight. I would rate the difficulty on par with something like Dark Souls. All in all, it's no doubt one of the best games out there.

At the start of the game maybe but once you reach the Lake of Nine, if you do enough side content the fights get pretty easy all the way to the end.
