I played Red Dead Redemption in 2011, started playing about a year after the game's release, and I never found it to be in any way special. It's good no question, but the massive amount of praise it received back then just made no sense to me. It's a solid 8/10, a game I enjoyed playing while it lasted, but will most likely never go back to play again.

I had a similar experience (probably a bit more negative than yours actually) when I played the game around release. It seemed like a good idea for a game, and I do want to play it again because a huge open world cowboy game sounds great. But when I played it back then it just never hooked me and I ended up only playing it for a few hours before moving on.

I did eventually finish RDR, but it took me a long time because the game just didn't hook me properly either. It was good while I was playing, but I never felt compelled to go back and play it when I was doing something else. Eventually I just kinda forced myself to finish it. I can see that it's a good game, but it just never held my interest for very long.
