The gameplay is fine, it's the classic FF gameplay after all. Materia and stuff is fun. I just couldn't get over the lame story and unlikable characters throughout. But of course everyone loves it because boring MCs and emo antagonists are totally lit!

I felt that the random battles were obnoxious in their frequency. And paired with a battle system I didn't like too much. Even the loading screens, while solid for the era, contributed negatively in a small way. It's been almost 21 years, so it's a little difficult to appraise after so much time, but that's the gist. I have enjoyed JRPG's with random battles since then, it just came together in a way I couldn't enjoy in VII.
