You're completely absolving Valve from their own duties as market leader. Competition is nice but it's not even possible if there is such an overwhelming monopoly. Ask Linux and Apple to step up their game, they tried and Windows still has their monopoly. And that's not because people are so fucking in love with Microsoft's great work. People use it because they're forced to. Same with other storefronts. Pure capitalism is bullshit, that's why actual developed countries have government oversight so that single giant entities cannot abuse their power. Capitalism cannot work itself out if it's already broken. We would be in a way worse spot if it wasn't for regulation. Well, the US will be there soon if they expand on their pro corporate bullshit even further. Capitalism breaks itself when one entity becomes too powerful. We've seen that time and time again and we see that today with the biggest corporations also being the worst.

You're basically telling microbes to step up their game against a supernova. It's hard to "GIVE A FUCK" and "WORK HARD" when the odds are absolutely stacked against you. What do you expect them to do? Have instantly all of the games, perfect software and all of the features? That wouldn't even be enough because people are already on steam. For people to switch platforms other stores would have to become twice as big, twice as good and give out free blowjobs every morning. Steam right now is terrible but functional. There is no way for people to switch right now because they've built their collections and friends on there.

And how are the other stores going to compete if nobody uses them? Your logic is flawed and doesn't respect Steams power at all. Your precious capitalism already figured it out. Steam won and there is nothing anyone can do about it with a reasonable amount of effort and money. The end goal of capitalism isn't equal competition, it's one big entity swallowing up everything else to be the most efficient. And congratulations, we reached that point with Steam.

And now let's get back to Steam. You haven't yet explained why we shouldn't hold Valve accountable for what they're doing. Why it has to be upon "the competition" to solve everyone's problems. Why Valve cannot do better. It's no secret that Valve is putting the most minimal effort into their store as possible. They're crushing their "competition" without any effort. Don't you think we're at a point where Steam is just too big to fail? Developers and Publishers will certainly not let that happen because their livelihood depends on it.

There is no entity to take away any power from Steam, we're way past that point. So don't you think it's reasonable instead of demanding more things from stores that are a lot worse off, demanding from Steam instead to better itself?

Capitalism doesn't entail the leader having to give up their share to the rest of the competition. You don't see people clamouring for Sony to give up their deals and exclusives to the competition. The competition has to pick things up by themselves and Nintendo is doing just that, while MS is still stuck in their own rut, trying to improve things as time goes on.

Again, there is nothing to stop devs from choosing to release on Steam. We have devs that also choose to release on GoG, but it has to be DRM free, as that is GoG's golden rule, which in turn can cut off some devs from releasing their game over there, thus they turn to Steam, because they aren't all going to flock to good guy Ubisoft, Activision, Bethesda and EA.

What MS has done with Windows, is totally different from what Valve has with Steam. Steam is optional. You have all the other storefront clients to choose from and use within multiple OS's. With Windows, you can only play Windows 10 based games that come from Xbox, that's MS silly rule, take them up on that. Steam however can operate on not only multiple windows OS's, but also Mac ans Linux as well. Steam even has games that run on both Mac and Linux OS, while some of MS's only work with 10, big difference, especially when one company/publisher owns an OS and the other one is doing fuck all with their OS (meaning Steam OS).

The last thing the industry needs is the the gov stepping in and "regulating" everything. I do not trust any government as far as I can throw them.

Microbes?. Are you seriously calling EA/Activision/Ubisoft/Bethesda microbes?. You do realise the insane amount of money all of those companies has made right?. They can afford to step up their game, only GoG is the one that cannot, because they define themselves purely by the DRM free rule, which excludes a lot of games out there that operate via some form of DRM. If a dev wants DRM in their game, tough luck for GoG, that's the dev's decision (which is why I don't want to buy into games with the shitty Denuvo DRM for one example).

Do you know why hardly many use those other storefronts besides GoG?. It's because they mostly sell only games they own or publish. They have shown no interest in indie devs, stop lying for them and making any claim that they do, because they don't. Where the fuck is EA supporting the modding and indie scene, where is activision and Ubisoft?. GoG doesn't have it's own Steam workshop yet and Bethesda is trying to nickel and dime consumers with their own tightly wound Bethesda mod shop, one which is trying to kill their own modding scene that they had fostered for years.

Valve is still working on their Steam overhaul, but I highly doubt the people disliking Steam or not wanting to use it will give a toss when it is finally rolled out.

If Steam "betters" itself, it would become something that the other storefronts can never ever compete against. Your own logic defies the rest of the competition if Steam "got gud".

Like Yuri said, Steam has got some bad, but it has also done a lot of good in past years. To ignore all the good and focus on all the bad is just silly and completely asinine.
