The funny thing is... I think if Valve didn't become the top dog or heck, if another service even if it is GOG becomes top dog instead of Valve, people will find things to whine about.

No one can really please these people now can they? Valve curates the store! Fuck em! Valve lets the community decide! Fuck em! Valve makes games! Fuck em! Valve doesn't make games! Fuck em! Valve helped save PC gaming! Fuck em! etc...

Tb, those folk were never really on board with them in the first place. A heavily curated Steam means we get less one hit wonders, high chances of less exclusives (as one example), as devs being pushed aside could easily work a deal with one of the big 3.

The funny thing is, even if GoG or another was top dog, that other crowd would be singing praise out the ass. I'm not a massive blind fan of Steam, but I know they've done a whole lot more for PC gaming than the other clients have. I know Steam has trash on their store, but the other publishers have released shitty PC ports, or AAA games loaded with MT's or being designed around GaaS. Yet conveniently, those people let all that trash slide.

Publisher specific stores are terrible examples here. If we can compare Steam to anything then it's the two other biggest stores in the industry, which is GoG and the Playstation store.

They both somehow manage to have some kind of quality control. That's not because they have fewer games to check, it's because they care about not being called the trash bin of gaming services.

Yes, Valve has done some things with Steam. Because they were the first ones. They were the default for a long time, long before actual competitors even existed. And now they're milking that cred. As any other monopoly they have become complacent and driven by corporate greed. I don't understand why there should be any kind of gratitude toward Valve for what they have done in the past. It's not like if Valve didn't exist, we wouldn't have PC gaming. We would simply have some other service right now and considering where Valve is right now it's likely that that service would do a lot better job.

I mean what is Valve doing right now that is so amazing? What are they doing that couldn't be done by literally anyone else if they weren't there?

You say that the competitors aren't doing enough to rob some share from Valve. Maybe that's only half of the story. Maybe you can't do much if your competitor has a fucking monopoly? Other market places simply have no chance in the first place. The only chance for someone to rise would be government interference to destroy the monopoly, because that's usually the only way out when a corporation has become too powerful.

Steam deserves no praise for what they're doing right now and if there was any gratitude left from what they did with PC gaming in the past it's long gone now thanks to their shitty behavior.

The point here isn't just about shitting on whoever is on top. Valve has all the power and money in the world to change things for the better. But they won't because they just don't give a shit. And that's the thing deserving all the shit in the world. I don't even know how it's possible to defend someone who has the power to change things for the better but doesn't. Unless of course Valve already is god. Because only gods can be omnipotent, do nothing good with their power and still be praised by millions of brainless drones.

Why do we even need someone else to do a better job than Valve? Valve can easily do that themselves. But they won't. Because they're shitheads.

If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.
