I personally felt like it was taking familiar setups and then playing with our expectations in an almost tongue in cheek way. Much smarter filmmaking than what was going on in the last few titles. We're talking about popcorn sci-fi and everyone is complaining that not every sub-plot fit tightly into the narrative. "Last Jedi" was flashing new ideas at us that really needn't be explained in midi-chlorian detail.
