Not new at all and I'd say it started with PSP.  And if you really want to get technical, Sony themselves have been doing it for a few years now in their financial reports.  When was the last time they provided portable numbers?

I won't take your word for it. As far as I know when people say X hardware manufacturer was #1, they based that on console sales. Which is why Sony was número uno in the 5th and 6th gen.
