Racist joke in 2017? Seriously, why? I can't with some people.

There were no joke... one friend asked the other in southern accent "do you want some grit?".  The girl was mos likely doing false reporting. And you see the college ended up paying for an agreement basically because they knew it would be bad PR.

People get fired like this all the time.  2 friends could be making a joke at work together, one is white and one is black.  Both of them are alright about what is said whether it has racial meaning or not.  Someone walks by and hear the jokes and get offended.  Next thing you know one of the 2 or both get fired.  In corporate America, you have to be very careful about what you say especially when it comes to jokes.  They now have these video sessions on harassment on the subject.  It sucks but you have to read the employee manual which no one ever does.

Except in this case there wasn't even a joke.

And the criticism is against the employeer behavior on it.

Thats a policy issue.  In other words, if someone makes a complaint, the due process would be to validate if the complaint is correct.  If someone makes a false complaint, then that person should be fired.  Just like making a false fire alarm.
