You can do time trials and split screen races (only on select tracks apparently).
lol @ people saying GT has never had much of a career mode. That's a load of crap. The first few had amazing career modes. IIRC 4/5 did as well, although the UI in 5 was way too bad for me to stick around much. Didn't play much of 6.
