I am still of the opinion that Japanese developed games are far and away better for the most part. How many people are gonna remember Persona 5 or even possibly DQ11 fondly and play those in 10 years? How many people are gonna do the same for Destiny or another western money-chugger?

Sticking with financials here, Japanese publishers have had problems to release games at the same frequency as American and European publishers. You can argue that Japanese products are more polished (and it's true), but they have wasted a lot of time and money on building their own engines instead of taking advantage of the tools that have been provided by other companies. And ultimately an engine is merely a tool that has no significant impact on the quality of a game; all that is still up to development philosophies and design processes.

You're right. That is ubequitous. I don't mind western tech being used provided it is somehow better, but it is still a surprise with the history of Japanese devs doing their own thing.
