With 256GB SD storage going for about 90-120$ (finding them for 90 isn't that easy though) right now, by the time 2TB will be a viable option in any way, the Switch will most likely no longer be a real factor on the market.
This isn't future proofing; it's a thin veil thrown over yet another poor hardware decision, leaving it up to the consumer to ensure the device has what is considered basic functionality as a console today is unfair. Obviously.
USB based external drives are a better option from an economic standpoint, but offering such ridiculously low storage is still highly unfair to the consumer.
"Buy your own storage for even more premium than we're already charging and as a bonus, we have no pack-in title this time and our "free" games in the online sub aren't really free at all and you will even use your own smart device for voice chat and other functions like setting up multiplayer!"
Those are some nifty selling points right there, Nintendo. They've clearly understood the importance of online and learned from their past mistakes.

Well, look at it this way: when the Switch is no longer supported and its servers are all offline you can still voice chat. So at least that's future proof.
